A building ensemble that stands out from the usual construction methods of the time - this was the idea of master bricklayer Riehmer at the end of the 19th century, which he implemented with flying colors. Berlin during the industrialization period was characterized by closely spaced rear buildings with their inner courtyards. Riehmer broke with this pattern - entirely in the spirit of sophisticated living quality - and instead laid out a private road and spacious garden areas between the 18 houses. In this way he created a quiet, green idyll in the middle of the city. The landscape design of the Hofgarten is intended to be used in a variety of ways: In addition to the quiet islands embedded in a varied planting, there will be meeting areas under old trees, but also natural play areas and a boules area. Garden elements such as floating wooden benches, natural stone and sculptures complement each other harmoniously with paths and flowerbeds. Riehmer's Hofgarten is very centrally located and well connected in the middle of Kreuzberg. It is an ideal starting point for people who enjoy the liveliness of the big city with its wide range of offerings and at the same time do not want to miss out on the peace and quiet of an urban retreat. Hardly any other district in Berlin is as multicultural as Kreuzberg, where a relaxed, tolerant and open coexistence has emerged from the most diverse lifestyles. Here, contrasts are seen as an enrichment and diversity is cultivated, which is manifested above all in the gastronomy with its cuisines from all over the world, at the colorful weekly markets and in the lively street scene. There is the small stationery shop next to the coffee roaster, there is the Turkish greengrocer next to the chic advertising agency, and in the back courtyard there is the small variety theater - the colorful mix is what makes Kreuzberg so lovable. This special attitude to life is complemented by the numerous parks and green spaces as well as the banks of the Landwehrkanal and rounded off by the diverse range of art and culture on offer. During the restoration of Riehmer's Hofgarten, monument conservators and restorers tracked down to the smallest detail elements from the period of construction. Many questions were asked: How were the walls covered and what colors were the wooden elements painted with? Where were there traces of a primer? How were the stucco elements color-coordinated? Every possible clue was followed up - and sometimes these were even hidden as fragments of wallpaper behind skirting boards. Carpenters, painters and metal workers worked meticulously to restore old and combine them with new elements.
